Can’t gain muscle you say?

Pauline Nordin | Pauline's Ramble... | Thursday, 11 March 2010

“It does not matter how much I eat and how much crap I eat, I just don’t gain weight!”

Yeah yeah yeah, heard that one more than once…lol

Hardgainers tend to make the same mistake as people who want to lose weight but say “whatever I do I don’t lose any weight!”: they forget things.

hardgainers tend to over estimate the calories and state “oh about 5000 caloriesĀ  a day I get” until I ask Oh you do? well list them for me and I will count it! And guess what happens: it is more about 2500. Ooops.

People who are desperate about losing weight do the same thing but they under estimate the food and think a big chicken breast is a serving. No it’s not, the chicken did not know it had to be 3 oz to be considered a good chicken breast!;-)

If you are a hard gainer, ask yourself the following questions:

Are you 100% sure about the amount of calories you are taking in DAILY?

If not, make sure you take the food through some researching because the chances are huge you are over estimating a lot.

Are you being consistent with your meals?

Missing one meal every day for a week can be about 7000 calories. That could be two pounds of muscle you are not growing due to the low caloric daily content.

Do you include nuts in your diet as well as oils?

If you eat too little fat you will have a harder time getting all the needed calories.

Are you eating too much crap food because You CAN?

Eating junk does not help you staying healthy. It promotes inflammation in your body. You don’t grow healthy tissue from crap! Just because you CAN eat it does not mean it has no impact on your body. The junk is toxic, it will occupy your body with weird fats that are not quality foods for muscle gain.

Are you under estimating the importance of consistency?

You need to be as disciplined with eating when gaining muscle mass as you need to be when dieting to lose fat! One missed meal or a workout is just as bad as missing a cardio session when losing weight.

Are you over training?

If you train almost every day, even if it is one muscle group per day, it is too much. You need time to recover. Your shoulder joints getting beaten up every time you train upper body muscles for instance. It’s like you go in and train shoulder 5 days in a row.

Are you neglecting legs?….

Some hardgainers don’t train legs except for some leg extensions and leg curls because they don’t like to get sore or squats don’t work with their bodies bla bla bla…. Well, you miss out on the best muscle stimulation EVER if you don’t train your HALF body. Look at those legs, they are atleast 50% of your body! Cardio does not count.

Are you eating grains and meats only?

ooooh, that is so old school bodybuilding it makes me puke! Ok, you need to get some greens in for your health. Eat green peas! Steamed spinach! mashed broccoli! Mix it in with your grains. You don’t want to get colon cancer due to a lack of veggies.

You think it is impossible to get enough calories?

No it’s not. But just like weight loss planning takes yes planning… you need to plan too. a bag of nuts contain about 1200 calories for instance. that is easy to chew down if they are roasted and salted right!

Anyway, there are many things to consider when trying to gain muscle….

Ps: I never ate this donut in case you wondered:-). Don’t believe everything you see haha!
