Fiber Q’s
Q: We don’t absorb any calories from wheat bran, is that the same for oat bran?
Pauline answers: Well, this is not totally true, I am sure we find data telling we do absorb nutrients from bran, however, if you watch what comes out the back door (yeah, we keep things easy straight here) you will be convinced bran does its cleansing job very well! Wheat bran is one of the richest dietary fiber foods we have, oat bran simply has less fiber. The purer the fiber source, the less absorption of the rest of the nutrients from the bran. You know, maybe we do absorb ALL calories, what do I know, I am just very confident in the fact those calories have no impact. I base this on experience with clients and myself for years.
You should compare wheat bran to oat bran. You will see there is a big difference in amount of dietary fiber.
Are there better sources of insoluble fiber? Yes, CORN BRAN and sugar beat bran. The latter one I have only found in Sweden, the product is called FIBREX.
Q: Since flax seeds need to be ground to get the nutrients, do our bodies absorb any calories from whole flax seeds?
Pauline answers: No. They go strictly through your body. You cannot use whole flax as your source of omega 3 if you don’t ground them.
